Choosing A Survival Water Filter For Travel

When people travel abroad whether it is for a holiday or for business, many will pack the usual items such as toiletries and clothing. Some even purchase travel insurance. Most, though, never plan what they’ll be eating or drinking when they travel. Knowing what you’ll be eating or drinking, however, is probably more important than the clothes you’ll be bringing along. If you have ever gotten food poisoning, you’ll know what an inconvenience it is and how costly it can be. No one would enjoy being hospitalized in a foreign country during their holiday or business trip.

You may be able to avoid food poisoning by ensuring that the establishment you patronize is clean and hygienic. To further guard against it, avoid uncooked or partially cooked meals altogether. That covers the food. What about the drink? Do you know what is in the water you drink? Many people incorrectly assume that tap water is safe to drink and is clean, clear, pure, and safe. Scientific and environmental studies have shown otherwise. Even if the water from a water source appears to be clear, clean, and safe to drink, consuming water from unknown sources or in countries where potable water can not be taken for granted could be hazardous to your health.

The potential for harmful chemicals (mercury, lead, arsenic, etc), bacteria, fungi, parasites, rust and other contaminants residing in water is growing worldwide. The kind of fresh uncontaminated water available a hundred years ago is harder and more expensive to obtain due to industrialization and a growing population. If the proper precautions aren’t taken to treat the water, drinking contaminated water can cause severe illness or disease, even death.

That’s where water filters come in. Water filters and water filtration systems have become a popular solution lately for tap water. The right filter will not only treat bad tasting tap water but will also treat contaminated water.

People take a variety of actions to treat the water they drink at home. They may:

– Install faucet filters, sink filters or a complete home water filtration system
– Pour the water through pitchers with a canister filtration systems such as Brita before drinking

All these may work well for drinkable water in developed countries where water from the tap is for the most part, safe to drink. Depending on where you go, whether you are camping or in a foreign country, taking the necessary precautions to treat your water prior to drinking is highly recommended. Boiling water does not remove the contaminants within. A portable water filter comes in very handy for such cases. For the mobile warrior, a water bottle with a built in water filtration system may do just the trick.

Not all water filters, however, are created equal. Would you trust your life as well as your loved ones with just any water filter to get the emergency water you need? Consider this, if you had to go so far as to obtain water from an unknown river or source, would the water be drinkable after water treatment? With so many water filters available, how do you know what’s best? Here are some things to consider:

– What companies or organizations endorse or use the product
– What independent studies or tests has the water company done to demonstrate the ability of their water purifier to remove contaminants
– What government bodies have approved the treatment methods
– What strict quality guidelines do they follow in the manufacture of these water purifiers
– How does the purified water taste after treatment
– How many specific contaminants does it remove
– What bacteria or fungi can it remove

The Woder N-Sur Survival Water Filter Bottle, for example, has justified it name – ‘Survival Water Filter Bottle’ for its High Performance Survival Filter – Water Filter removes 99.99% Toxic chemicals, Heavy Metals, Unpleasant Tastes & Odors and Microbiological Threats. Filter removes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), PCB’s, trihalomethanes, synthetic organic compounds (SOC’s), detergents, pesticides, DDT, asbestos, aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and mercury, as well as radiologicals such as Radon 222, E-Coli, Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

keeps you safe from hidden contaminants in water from most common outdoor water source, including lakes, streams, rivers, wells or ponds. The Survival filter removes up to 99.99% of bacteria and cysts, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals, as well as bad tastes and odors. Great for outdoor activities and Emergency Preparation. It is good for up to 25 gallons for all contaminants using water from any source, and for up to 100 gallons for chlorine, taste and odor using municipal water.

All these are important questions to answer. Be sure to look closely at their product specifications. Before you go on any trip to a foreign country, remember to pack along with you a proven water treatment system all contained within the convenience of a water bottle.

Information About Charcoal Water Filters

The following article presents the very latest information on water filters. If you have a particular interest in water filters, then this informative article is required reading.

Charcoal used as a water filter system is produced from coconut husk. Charcoal is used as a water filter because it easily absorbs impurities that are in the water as the water passes along it’s surface. Charcoal can be used in two ways; it can either be ground into small pieces or formed into a solid and permeable block. Forming it into a block is often preferred since it makes the charcoal have a greater surface area which will remove more impurities.

Charcoal water filters are commonly used in households; actually about 95% of domestic water filters are made from charcoal, because they are simple to install, cheap and effective at removing many toxins that are found in the environment. According to the EPA (environmental protection agency), charcoal filters must be “rated” in order to remove particles that are 1 micron or larger to effectively remove the most deadly contaminants, which are Cryptosporidium (an intestinal disease in humans that can cause severe diarrhea) and Giardia (which causes parasites to develop in domestic animals and humans). An average charcoal filter will last a family anywhere between 6 and 9 months. Woder Filters, like the Woder 10K-Gen2 Under sink, the Woder 5K-DC bathroom filter and Amazon’s best rated Woder 10K-DC undersink filtration system provide an average of 36 months capacity!!!

When asking John F. Fleeman, Woder Filter’s head of QA, what is Woder Filter’s micron rating, he replies; “Granular filters do not have a micron rating. A micron rating is provided for carbon block style filters or filters using pleated membrane materials etc. These type technologies use nano sized to larger pore sizes to separate solids from the flow of water. A solid can be anything suspended or in some cases dissolved and can include cysts, bacteria and or virus. The in lines are chambered in a way to create maximum retention while only slightly limiting flow rate.”

Most of Woder Filtration system’s formulas are granular and the technologies are ion exchange and catalytic adsorption.

Some charcoal filters are enhanced by the use of activated silver, which provides extra antibacterial protection. Minerals which are essential for human health are still permeable to charcoal filters, so they are also safe in this sense. Charcoal filters can also be used as filters in fish tanks and many other house held appliances. You can purchase charcoal filters at your local super market, or pet store if you wish to use one in your fish tank. For information on how to set them up, you can search on the internet, or look on the instruction manual of the product you purchase.

When word gets around about your command of water filters facts, others who need to know about water filters will start to actively seek you out.

Water Filters – Learn About The Various Options

Quality water filtration is one of the best investments that one can make for one’s health. Good water tastes better and also protects you from infections and diseases that could spread through unfiltered water. The market for water filters is vast and one has a huge range to choose from depending upon how much one wants to spend and if one wants protection from some specific element in water.

Water Filtration – The Options That You Have

As mentioned above, one has an enormous choice as far as water filters are concerned. The choice ranges from hand made terracotta filters, professional under sink filters, filtrations add-on’s on your refrigerators inline water filters and more. Then the market has something called ‘replacement filters’. These are interchangeable and are a replacement for your previous water filters.

You could also opt for water filters for specific problems. For example, if the percentage of Fluoride in your water is high, then you should preferably get a water filter which will be removing or reducing Fluoride, ie., Fluoride water filter. Also available are a wide variety of specialty cartridge systems that are designed to handle virtually any water quality problem. There are cartridge systems specially for filtering oil and so on.

Various technologies have also come to be used in water filters like reverse osmosis or UV technology. reverse osmosis is known for producing 0 TDS water. TDS is total dissolved solids. In fact…dead water will have the lowest TDS reading and should not be considered good drinking water. A UV Water filter will do the function of pathogen killing by using the power ultraviolet.

If you are looking to save, then you could opt for handmade terracotta filters which are cheaper and offer dual functions of cooling and filtering water. The choice is yours and you can select the filter which best suits your pocket and needs.

Basic Guide To Swimming Pool Filters

We, at Woder Filters, do not deal with pool filters, but we know a thing or two, so as always, we share our knowledge!

One item that every swimming pool must have is a pool filter. A swimming pool filter is the main process that keeps your swimming pool clean of the various debris that are brought in by wind, rain, cleaning supplies, toys, and swimmers. A pool filter works to keep the water clear and promotes safety and health while in the water. The pool filter has three main components that allow it to keep your water clear and safe for swimmers. First, there is a motor and pump that work to bring the water in and push it out during filtration. Then the filter itself falls into three categories DE (Diatomaceous Earth), cartridge and sand.

A DE (Diatomaceous Earth) filter is probably the best for filtering even the minutest particles that could be in the water. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural substance that is found in the soil. It has the consistency of a fine, white powder. A filter made of Diatomaceous Earth comes in two different types of filters, a spin filter and a vertical grid filter. These two terms simply signify how the filter is set up. The spin filter does not work as well as the vertical and is virtually obsolete today.

A sand filter makes use of sand to filter the water of particles and allows filtered water to run through easily. The cartridge filter works in the same manner as a Diatomaceous Earth filter but without the use of any substance other than fabric mesh to filter the water.

Here are a few things you should consider before purchasing a swimming pool filter:

First, find the volume of the entire swimming pool. To find the volume you must consider the shape of your pool:

If your pool is rectangular – Multiply the following – Length, width, average depth
If your pool is circular – Multiply the following– Radius, 3.14, average depth

Next, figure the capacity of your pool. This will allow you to calculate how much water your swimming pool holds. This is an important factor in purchasing a pool filter. To find the capacity, multiply the volume (you found in step one) by 7.48.

You will then have to determine the type of filter you want. Consider if your pool would benefit from a cartridge, DE, or sand filter. You should also consider if you want the filter to be vacuum or pressure. It is suggested that you should make the filter slightly larger than your initial calculation to allow for better filtration.

There are a lot of different aspects that must be taken into consideration when purchasing a swimming pool filter. For the entire filtration system you can expect to pay anywhere from $20.00(USD) to $300.00 (USD). Replacement filters are slightly cheaper in some aspects, depending on the type of filter your system uses, you can expect to pay anywhere from $4.00 (USD) to $200.00 (USD).

It is important that you follow all recommended procedures outlined by the swimming pool manufacturer. This will help you in maintaining clear and healthy pool water that can be enjoyed by all swimmers.

Now, before making a decision, get a filtered glass of water, have a drink and relax! Taste good? Tell your friends that nothing tastes like the water that goes out of our wonderful Woder 10K-Gen2 Under Sink Water Filter.

Water Filters and Purifiers – What are the health benefits?

Water filters, purifiers and water filtration systems convert ordinary tap water into perfectly safe drinking water. They remove impurities and contaminants by means of a fine physical barrier or a chemical process.

Health benefits of a water filter:

A water filter or water purifier is very beneficial for healthy living. Ordinary water contains numerous contaminants including bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, minerals, and man-made chemical pollutants that cannot be seen with the naked eye. These contaminants not only cause the water to taste bad, but are also very harmful to your health.

A water filter kills all of these organisms and filters out the contaminants to make the water fit for drinking. Thus water filters save us from many dangerous bacterial and viral diseases that spread due to the contamination of water.

The working technique of water filters is based on sieving, ion exchanges and other processes. A water filter can eliminate particles much smaller than the holes through which the water passes.

Alkaline water ionizers provide alkaline water. The following are the health benefits of alkaline water:

• Promotes optimal physical performance.
• Protects DNA from oxidative damage.
• Alleviates blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
• Betters liver function exams in hepatic disorders.
• Betters gastro duodenal ulcer and prevents recurrences.
• Betters allergic disorders such as asthma, urticaria, rhinites and atopic dermatitis.
• Betters hypertension and hypotension.
• Betters serum bilirubin levels in newborn babies.
• Impressively suppressed the growth of cancer cells transplanted into mice, demonstrating their anti-cancer effects.

The following are acid water health benefits:

• Electrolyzed oxidizing water inactivates Escherichia coli and Listeria on plastic kitchen cutting boards.
• It reduces bacterial load of treated alfalfa sprouts between 91.1% and 99.8%.
• It can reduce food borne pathogens.
• It is a useful disinfectant for hospital infections.

Water filters and purifiers can be purchased at water filter stores and water filter online stores. The Woder Filters and Brita are the two well-known brands of water filters.

Water Filters: Facts You May Not Know

Water filters that are used in the home are mainly used to remove various metals or chemicals. Examples of substances that can be removed are chlorine or lead. Sometimes the water filters are used to get rid of harmful substances, and at other times they are used to improve the taste or odor of the water.

There are many types of filters that can be used in the home. These include microporous ceramic filters, carbon block resin, metallic alloy filters, granular activated carbon filters, ultra-filtration membranes, distillation systems, and reverse osmosis flters.

Microporous ceramic filters use ceramic to pass the water through. The pores in the ceramic are so small that the unwanted substances are not able to pass through with the water. When this type of filter gets clogged up, you just need to run water through it in the reverse direction to unclog the pores.

Granular activated carbon filters work by passing the water through a type of carbon that filters out the impurities. Carbon filters have to be replaced periodically. They cannot change the acidity of water.

Water distillers work by boiling the water and then catching and condensing the steam back into water. The result should be totally pure water. However, this process does remove the good minerals from the water too.

Reverse osmosis filters use pressure to drive the reverse osmosis process, and the result is very pure water, just like distilled water. It was originally invented in order to create drinking water from salt water, but it works for taking out other substances too. Like distilled water, there will be no minerals left in the water.

There are various points in your home where you can install a water filter. If you want to filter your whole home’s water at once, you can install a whole house water filtration system. A smaller solution would be to install a water filter under your kitchen sink to filter only the water in the kitchen.

Other water filters come built into refrigerators and filter the water that is used to create ice as well as the water that is dispensed in the refrigerator door.

You can get a water pitcher that will filter just a pitcher full of water at a time. You can even get water bottles with a built in filter. This is great for use at work, since you can just add tap water to the bottle and you will be drinking filtered water.

There are numerous health benefits to drinking filtered water. Water filters can remove harmful substances such as lead, chlorine, bacteria, harmful metals, and other toxins. Filtered water often tastes better too, so you drink more of it, which is good for your overall health. Even cooked food can taste better when prepared with filtered water.

Home water filters are cheaper in the long run than continually purchasing bottled water. It saves you the time and effort of carrying home all that water too. And you don’t need to find a place to store the water bottles. Having filtered water always available is definitely very convenient.

Questions And Answers About Ultraviolet Water Filter Systems

“Currently, Woder Filters does not manufacture Ultraviolet Water Filtration Systems and therefore we cannot provide any recomendation, but as always”… says Idan Granit, Woder Filter’s CEO, “we can assist…”, he laughs.

Whenever you purchase an ultraviolet water filter system you should know that has been designed in such a way as to protect your drinking water from the occasional intrusion of microbiological contamination. These filters are becoming a lot more popular today than ever before. This is why a lot of people have a lot of questions about these filters.

Answers To Your Questions About Using An Ultraviolet Water Filter

There are some very common questions that people ask whenever they are thinking about purchasing an ultraviolet water filter. These questions include:

Are any chemicals required by this system? Or is there anything else that I will need to add?: It is recommended by most manufacturers that you use a 5 micron sediment filter because large particles act as a haven for microorganisms, which is what you are trying to destroy.

Sometimes multiple sediment filters are required because of the water’s turbidity. This is because color and suspended particles will diminish the transmission quality of any UV light. In these cases, a quality carbon filter is used to filter the sediment first.

Should I do anything before I install an ultraviolet water filter system?: You should make sure that your system (water lines, water heater, etc.) is clean first. In order to do this, you should disinfect the entire downstream system with chlorine.

How long does the UV bulb last?: You will need to replace the ultraviolet light bulb once every 10 to 12 months. While the bulb will last a lot longer then that, its capacity for neutralizing microbes will be diminished after this length of time and so you will want to make sure that it is changed at this point so that it can work as effectively as possible.

Why is the water cloudy/white after a new filter cartridge is installed?: This is because the water needs to be ran for a few minutes once a new ultraviolet water filter cartridge is installed. The water’s cloudiness indicates that there is air in your line, housing and cartridge. This is normal whenever you replace a cartridge.

After you run the water for a few minutes the cloudy conditions will go away unless your water is VERY cold. In this case the oxygen in the water is what is making your water look cloudy. Either way, it is always a good idea to run the water for a few minutes after you install a new filter cartridge.

When To Use Replacement Water Filter Cartridges

Many under the sink water purification systems have replacement water filter cartridges which need to be changed every 600 to 1200 gallons (or 10,000 gallons with Woder Filters); unless there is a gallon-o-meter attached to the average person’s faucet, the number of gallons used could be somewhat difficult to determine.

One simple way to decide if it is time to use a replacement water filter is if the sink begins to lose water pressure; the sink will lose water pressure because the filter is clogged with dirt or other sediments. Depending on the microns the filter is able to keep out of the water some units may be washed out and reused for a time; usually if a filter stops less than 5 microns from escaping the filter, rinsing out the filter is useless.

“It is important to highlight that granular filters do not have a micron rating” says Idan Granit, CEO of Woder Filters. “A micron rating is provided for carbon block style filters or filters using pleated membrane materials etc. These type technologies use nano sized to larger pore sizes to separate solids from the flow of water. A solid can be anything suspended or in some cases dissolved and can include cysts, bacteria and or virus.”

A good rule of thumb is that an average household will use about 600 gallons of water per month from their kitchen sink for drinking, cooking, and cleaning; using the replacement water filter before the water actually starts to taste or smell bad is a good idea, however waiting until there are signs that the filter is loosing effectiveness is a good idea to prevent waste.

Whole House Units

Whole house water purification systems are the most practical for homes with hard water or contaminates which irritate the skin because impurities such as lead take a time to dispel with most whole house units and are treated more effectively using point of use or under the sink units.

Using replacement filters for whole house units is very similar to using replacement water filters for countertop/ under the sink units; the difference will usually lie in the amount of microns it filters. Whole house units in general allow more contaminates to pass to provide adequate water pressure for the entire home; as a result many of these replacement water filters can be rinsed out to prolong their usefulness.

Lessening water pressure is a good sign that the whole house water filer cartridge needs to be replaced; though these types can be rinsed out, it is a good idea to only rinse them one time before using a replacement water filter cartridge.

Also if a peculiar smell or taste returns to the water a replacement water filter cartridge is also necessary; most water filter cartridges will last for three or four months in whole house water filtration units.

The Good, The Bad And The Thirsty Consumers Turning To Bottled And Fil…

The Good, The Bad And The Thirsty Consumers Turning To Bottled And Filtered Water For Taste, Quality And Convenience

Water consumption is up nationwide, according to the Beverage Marketing Association. However, consumers seem to prefer bottled water to their local tap water due to taste and quality concerns. The latest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranking shows Chicago at the top of the list when it comes to cities with excellent water quality and taste, while cities like San Francisco, Boston and Phoenix ranked at the bottom.

But no matter where you live, more and more consumers are turning to filtered or bottled drinking water. In fact, a new study conducted by Mintel found that nearly 40 percent of consumers own a water filtration device, and nearly 55 percent purchase bottled water to drink at home.

Of the people who own water filters, 64 percent purchased them to improve taste and 62 percent did so because of health concerns.

“While the majority of water supplies are safe, consumers are increasingly aware of potential contaminants in their drinking water,” said Tom Bruursema, general manager of NSF International’s Drinking Water Treatment Units Certification Program. “As a result, many consumers are looking for home water filtration devices depending on their individual needs.”

Growing attention to healthy weight loss is also causing people to drink more water.

“Today, more than ever, consumers are drinking up to slim down,” said Rosemary Kimani, owner of fitness club Curves Logan Square in Chicago. “Almost all health and weight-loss programs recommend people drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.”

According to the Beverage Marketing Association, U.S. consumers now drink more bottled water annually than any other beverage, other than carbonated soft drinks. Last year, Americans drank 7.5 billion gallons of bottled water, which translates into more than 26 gallons per person.

Another growing trend-more consumers are finding filtered water from their refrigerator to be an inexpensive and convenient alternative to purchasing bottled water.

“We’re seeing quite an increase in water filter sales as related to our side-by-side refrigerator owners. Of those who own water filters nationally, 51 percent have a dispenser built into their refrigerator, up from 35 percent in 2003,” said Bryan Aown, Whirlpool brand director of water filtration. “In addition to convenience, the growth may be attributed to cost savings. Over its six-month life, a refrigerator water filter processes as much as 200 gallons, which is approximately $0.20 per gallon, when bottled water can cost $6 to $9 a gallon. Woder filters like the Woder 5K-JGor the 10K-JG10K-JG offers a much longer lifespan”

Woder Filters brand states most filters are located in the refrigerator’s base grill to provide maximum storage space. Additionally, filters cost roughly $40 and only need to be replaced twice a year, resulting in just an $80 annual expense. Other common filters include systems installed in plumbing or faucet attachments. Woder filters provides a 3 year refrigerator water filter that needs a replacement every 3 years and costs the less than $40!!!
