The main variable is faucet compatibility: dorm bathroom faucets come in a wider variety of configurations than standard kitchen faucets, so check the thread type on your faucet head before ordering a faucet-mount unit.
Space
A gravity filter unit has a real footprint-two chambers stacked, roughly the size of a small coffee maker. Pick a permanent spot for it on move-in day rather than trying to find a home for it later when the room is already organized. Can I use it on a dorm desk instead of installing it at the sink?

Can I take it with me when I move out?
